The dancer does not dance just to perform certain rhythmical movements of the body. They do not care if the dancing either arrives anywhere, achieves anything, accomplishes a goal or if it's an “efficient” dance. All they are doing is letting the playfulness unfold, while the mind is being ruled by the unconsciousness silence.

In our day where we spend most of our time following instructions from glowing screens, dancing becomes revolutionary. For once, we are applying energy instead of wasting it. It is by releasing anxiety, not to suffer from it, that one can become masterful in the art of living.

I know of no better activity that guarantees to bring us right into the present moment. All it takes are simple notes, the silence in between them and the pointless movements. A perfect combination that assures to move us further away from anxiety and gadgetry but to bring our spirits closer.

And just like the dancers, who abandoned themselves completely and forget that they are now dancing, we also must sometimes forget what we're doing in order to abandon ourselves completely.

It's only by slowing down to the level of a single beat that we can truly enjoy the pleasures of life. Rushing ahead will only make us miss them.

Being default settings

In the journey to becoming superhuman, we chose more instead of less. We attend to shiny new tools that promise to make us smarter, more effective, and to influence more people than we could ever have done on our own.

We push aside anything that doesn’t seem to give us an algorithmic edge, a financial return or any other productivity metric of our choice. We became scared of our own thoughts, stuck in our egos and afraid to let go. Anxiety, depression, negative feedback loops ruminating over our imperfections are the normal modes of Being.

“In an age of advanced technology, inefficiency is the sin against the Holy Ghost” - ALDOUS HUXLEY

Nowadays, we can choose how to spend our time in a variety of ways. But only a few of these choices have the power to transform our lives. The way we pay attention to the world alters who we are. That’s why it is wise to be mindful about what we spend time attending to.

We rarely pause in silence or solitude to reflect on the things that truly bring us joy. Solitary thinking is considered useless, idleness is a form of treason and daydreamers are labeled mad people.

We need to take ourselves somewhere quieter, better, more spacious and with a window to transcendence.

Lost pleasures are these places - where we find our essential modes of Being. It is the model we should attend to understand the world around us and within us. We’d come up with 52 of them, one for every week of the year. But many more exist. All of them for free.

We should treat our lives less like a journey and more like poetry, a piece of music or a dance - where the point isn't to arrive at a particular spot on the floor; the point is simply to dance.

Before it is too late, let us engage the world with wonder, at least once a week. It’s time to heal our collective soul from spiritual and moral damage. Don’t be afraid of the silence. Solitude, idleness and dreaming in a noisy world are truly disruptive acts. Meaning is feeling rather than achieving.
